NDA Eligibility Criteria – Complete Guide by Nation Defence Academy
Table of Contents
ToggleNDA eligibility criteria are the very first thing every student must check before starting their defence preparation journey. Thousands of aspirants appear every year for the NDA exam, but many of them fail the test because they don’t read the eligibility conditions properly. For the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, there are certain conditions regarding Nationality, Age, and Physical Fitness. This guide by Nation Defence Academy covers everything in simple, clear language.
NDA Eligibility Criteria – Overview
The NDA exam is conducted by UPSC twice every year — NDA 1 and NDA 2. Every applicant must satisfy all of the following conditions:
✔ Nationality
✔ Age Limit & Marital Status
✔ Educational Qualification
✔ Physical Standards (Height & Weight)
✔ Medical Fitness
Missing even one condition means you cannot apply — so read each point carefully.
Nationality
To be eligible, a candidate must be:
✔ A citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan
✔ A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention to permanently settle here
✔ A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, or East African countries like Kenya, Uganda, or Tanzania with intent to permanently settle in India
Candidates from the last three categories must produce a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.
NDA Age Limit & Marital Status
- Minimum age: 16.5 years
- Maximum age: 19.5 years
Age is calculated from the date of commencement of the NDA course, not the exam date. Only unmarried candidates — male and female — are eligible. Candidates must remain unmarried until the completion of training at NDA or INA. This rule has no exceptions.
NDA Educational Qualification
For Indian Army Wing:
✔ Passed Class 12 or equivalent from a recognized board
✔ Any stream — Science, Commerce, or Arts — is acceptable
For Indian Navy & Air Force Wings:
✔ Passed Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects
Appearing students in Class 12 can also apply but must submit proof of passing before final joining. At Nation Defence Academy, many students start NDA coaching while still in school so they are exam-ready the moment they become eligible.
NDA Height Eligibility
| Service | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Army | 157 cm | 152 cm |
| Navy | 157 cm | 152 cm |
| Air Force | 162.5 cm | 152 cm |
Relaxations: Gorkha and North-Eastern state candidates get 5 cm relaxation; Lakshadweep candidates get 2 cm relaxation.

NDA Weight Eligibility
There is no fixed weight for all candidates. Weight is assessed in proportion to height and age using a UPSC-approved chart. Both underweight and overweight candidates can be declared temporarily unfit. A male candidate of 157 cm should ideally weigh between 49 to 52 kg. Maintain a balanced diet and stay physically active throughout your preparation.
NDA Physical Fitness Requirements
The medical board checks overall physical condition during SSB. Key requirements:
✔ No deformity of the spine, flat feet, or knock knees
✔ Chest well-developed with minimum 5 cm expansion
✔ Normal hearing in both ears
✔ No history of psychiatric treatment or mental illness
✔ Eyesight within prescribed standards
NDA Eyesight Standards
| Wing | Better Eye | Worse Eye | Myopia Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Army | 6/6 | 6/9 | –2.5D |
| Navy | 6/6 | 6/6 | As prescribed |
| Air Force | 6/6 | 6/6 | –0.75D |
Air Force has the strictest standards. If you wear glasses and plan to join the Air Force, consult a specialist early. Colour blindness and squint generally lead to disqualification.
NDA Physical Activities Recommended Before SSB
SSB is a five-day process with demanding outdoor tasks. Start training early:
✔ Running 3–5 km daily; 2.4 km in under 15 minutes
✔ Push-ups (20–30 reps), Sit-ups (20–25 reps), Chin-ups (8–10 reps)
✔ Rope climbing and skipping for functional stamina
✔ Swimming — especially important for Navy aspirants
✔ Team sports like football or basketball to build leadership and communication
NDA Medical Test at SSB
After SSB, candidates face a detailed medical examination at a military hospital covering:
✔ X-ray of chest and spine
✔ Eye, ear, and dental check-up
✔ Blood and urine tests
✔ Orthopedic and skin assessment
✔ Heart, lung, blood pressure, and pulse check
Temporary unfitness can be reviewed. Permanent conditions lead to final disqualification.
Key Points to Remember for NDA Eligibility
✔ Always check the latest UPSC notification — details can update each year
✔ Age is counted from course commencement, not exam date
✔ Zero relaxation in age limit for any category
✔ Keep all original documents ready before SSB
✔ Begin physical training from Day 1 of preparation
